T oda la noche pasó lloviendo . Intentó dormirse, permitiendo que las copiosas gotas de agua que caían sobre el techo de teja le arrullaran con su dulce melodía hasta que su espíritu lograra salir, al mismo tiempo que su cuerpo recibía un muy merecido descanso.

Sin embargo, no fue así.

Hay ocasiones en las que el sueño se niega a brindarnos consuelo, de repente, el tiempo hace una breve pausa y éste llega sin que nos percatemos de ello.

Pero para don Matías, esta no fue una de esas ocasiones.

Al cabo de unos minutos, apenas pensó que el sueño le estaba ganando la batalla a su imaginación, el hombre sintió que se caía dentro de un pozo de agua, y fue entonces que él dio un salto; librándose así de una pesadilla, que, de otra forma, hubiera resultado ser sumamente desafiante.

“¡Ay, Dios Mío!; por dicha no pasó a más”, pensó don Matías, al mismo tiempo que levantaba la mano derecha y la colocaba sobre su corazón. Recordó entonces los consejos de su médico, quien en una ocasión le había recomendado que cerrara los ojos y escuchara el sonido de su propia respiración para luego, poder así, conciliar el sueño.

Incluso, intentó traer de regreso algunas memorias alegres de su pasado. El recuerdo más remoto que surgió en su mente fue el día que trajo a su segunda esposa a vivir a la casa de su padre, don Isaías, situada a escasos tres kilómetros de la finca que un año más tarde, su padre le dejó a él por ser don Matías su único heredero.

Pero nada de esto dio resultado.

Más bien, sus ojos cansados de viajar en el tiempo recorrieron cada pieza cuadrada del cielo raso, contando una por una; bajando luego por la pared de tablas, y por último, contando éstas de dos en dos.

No se atrevió, de ninguna manera, a detener sus ojos en ningún lugar en particular. De hecho, con absoluto detalle, repitió el procedimiento un par de veces más, hasta que finalmente, sus temores emergieron a la superficie.

Ahora bien, ¿qué era lo que tanto le preocupaba?
