Preface
Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Problem Solver is both a reference work and a workbook for intermediate students who are working toward mastery of the Spanish language.
You, as an intermediate student, have been engaged with the material and are laboring to get a lot of information about vocabulary, grammar rules, and pronunciation classified, understood—and ready for use on the tip of your tongue. Intermediate students can feel the weight of what they are learning grow, even as the job of learning more must go on. This is a critical period for you. You may struggle with patterned errors which, if not corrected, become fossilized and difficult to unlearn. Indeed, being a successful learner depends a great deal on seeking patterns, and this requires paying attention to detail as well as to the big picture. Unfortunately, too many intermediate students decide that there is just too much to learn, and give up—just when they could have found a book like this one to straighten out the major tangles in their minds and give them courage to move on.
The problems addressed in this book are not the only ones that intermediate learners will have. However, the book does attempt to cover the most common problems, the ones that I, as a teacher and professional translator of this beautiful language for thirty years, have seen intermediate students struggle with. Over the years, I’ve assembled an arsenal of ideas and examples to help students see these problems from different angles. Thus, it gives me pleasure and professional pride to believe that my success as a teacher of Spanish is what has led McGraw-Hill to invite me to write this book for you. This book should sit alongside your grammars, dictionaries, and the other Spanish language materials you consult when preparing an oral presentation, a written report, or when studying for any grammar test. It is also a workbook, and yet, while there are exercises to reinforce the lessons, accompanied by explanatory answer keys, there is no need to proceed through the book in any particular sequence.
After all, no rule is more important than another. If your goal is to speak Spanish correctly, then all rules are important. All the chapters, which are intended as advice and guidance about how to make your learning of Spanish more efficient and enjoyable, are accompanied by exercises. The keys to the exercises also provide explanations in cases where the correct answer given (or even wrong answers chosen) might not be immediately apparent when checking your work. Finally, you certainly will not find answers to all your questions here, and that is as it must be, for the topics here are finite in number when compared with the vastness, depth, and richness of the Spanish language.

This, my fifth volume in their Practice Makes Perfect series, like the others, would never have seen the light of day without his unwavering confidence in my labors. Also, my sincerest admiration and thanks go to Ms. Lylje Klein, a native of Venezuela, who for nearly ten years has generously been a second pair of eyes for nearly every scholarly article or book I have written. She has conscientiously proofed my work, ranging from my manuscripts and translations of five volumes of Spanish Baroque lyrics by the Spanish Carmelite composer Cristóbal Galán and their preliminary studies, to articles on more modern literary themes, including criticism on Gabriel García Márquez’s
