Karen Armstrong (Wildmoor, Worcestershire, Reino Unido, 1944) es una escritora británica especializada en religión comparada, miembro del grupo de alto nivel de la Alianza de Civilizaciones y Premio princesa de Asturias de ciencias sociales 2017.

En 1964 y tras siete años como monja católica en la Society of Holly Child Jesus, abandonó los hábitos. Después de graduarse en la Universidad de Oxford ha dedicado gran parte de su vida a estudiar las religiones desde un punto de vista histórico y a enseñar literatura en la Universidad de Londres y en un colegio público. Miembro honorario de la Association of Muslim Social Scientist, su trabajo se ha traducido a cuarenta idiomas, y ha colaborado en tres documentales para la televisión. Es autora de más de veinte títulos entre los que destacan: Una historia de Dios y Una historia de Jerusalén.

Karen Armstrong se ha convertido un referente mundial en la historia de las religiones y escribe para varios medios de comunicación, entre otros es columnista de The Guardian.

Desde 2005, Karen Armstrong es miembro del Grupo de Alto Nivel de la Alianza de las Civilizaciones, una iniciativa de la ONU a instancias de la propuesta del presidente José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero para promover el compromiso de la comunidad internacional para tender puentes sobre la brecha abierta entre la sociedad islámica y la occidental. El Grupo de Alto Nivel de la Alianza de las Civilizaciones está copresidido por el español Federico Mayor Zaragoza y el turco Mehmet Aydin.
